Design and Technology

 

 

The Design and Technology department at St Edmund Arrowsmith has highly dedicated specialist teachers and support technicians to ensure high quality teaching and learning is delivered in this very creative and enthusiastic department. The faculty is committed to developing new and inspiring projects that will provide pupils of all abilities with a secure understanding of Design and Technology and its implementation to the world of industry.

 

The Design and Technology department consists of the Warehouse (a large multi-use space) including a specialist textiles area and an area dedicated to CAD/CAM. There are two further rooms off the main warehouse space which consist of a food technology room and a resistant materials workshop.

 

Curriculum Overview

KS3

At Key Stage 3, students will undertake a range of skill based projects to facilitate the mastery of key knowledge, skills and understanding in the subject. Students will be taught Design and Technology in 4, 1 hour sessions over a two week period in mixed ability groups and will remain with the same class teacher as they rotate through the different DT disciplines.

KS4

In Year 9 students opt for their preferred material area of D&T. Students will build on their experience of foundation D&T to develop mastery of key knowledge, skills and understanding in their chosen area. All students will learn key skills in Year 9 through a range of design and make assignments and at the end of this phase of the course, students will be guided towards a GCSE or vocational course based on attainment and key strengths.

 

 

 

Design & Technology GCSE (Textiles or Hard materials route) (Sept’17 onwards)

Year 10 study will see students building on the knowledge, skills and understanding gained in Year 9 as well as exploring further tools, equipment and machinery. Students will work through a number of mini projects all geared to give them the appropriate skills and knowledge to enable them to develop originality in their design work and take risks to promote creativity and flair within their coursework. Their research and design skills will be broadened alongside GCSE level theory and examination skills. In year 11 students will start their NEA (Non Examined Assessment) project by responding to a brief and solving a design problem. This will constitute 50% of the course and the remaining 50% of the course will be a 2 hour external exam at the end of the course.

 

Level 1 / 2 Hospitality and Catering (WJEC) (Sept’17 onwards)

This qualification enables students to learn about this vocational sector and the potential it can offer them for their careers or further study. It is most suitable as a foundation for further study. This further study would provide learners with the opportunity to develop a range of specialist and general skills that would support their progression to employment. Employment in hospitality and catering can range from waiting staff, receptionists and catering assistants to chefs, hotel and bar managers and food technologists in food manufacturing. All of these roles require further education and training either through apprenticeships or further and higher education.

Students will also study basic nutrition, the effects of food on the body, healthy eating, meal planning, special dietary needs as well as studying all food commodities, fire safety, food service and food presentation.

 

Product Design (AQA) (Resistant Materials or Food route) (Ends Summer 2018)

Through the study of Product Design, students will be skilled in the design and manufacture of high quality products in a wide variety of materials across all disciplines including textiles and food, combining practical knowledge with transferrable skills such as problem solving, analytical skills and time management.

 

Textiles Technology (AQA) (Ends Summer 2018)

Through the study of Textiles Technology, students will be skilled in the design and manufacture of high quality textiles products and fashion garments. The controlled assessment focuses the students to work independently through a brief and encourages problem solving, analytical skills and time management.
